Languages at UCS
The department offers French, German and Spanish
to both GCSE and A' Level Standard. Pupils commence with the study
of French in Year 7. In Year 9 they can then opt for German or
Spanish as additional languages. We are based in the new Jeremy Bentham
building and have two state-of-the-art ICT suites and a broad range
of resources available to the pupils, including subscriptions to
MyWorks, Vocab Express, Rosetta Stone and departmental websites and
materials. We maintain an excellent track record in preparing pupils
for Higher Education and throughout the school strive to offer as
much variety and intellectual stimulation as possible, whilst
tailoring tuition to individual pupils’ needs. The department
organises annual trips to
Paris,
Hamburg and
Salamanca, in addition
to cinema, museum and theatre outings. The
Modern Languages Society is key to promoting such opportunities. Pupils are also actively
encouraged to partake in a number of language events and
competitions, such internal vocabulary leagues, national French
writing competitions (Winner 2010), Think Kafka Essay Prize (Winner
2010), the Linguistics Olympiad and the Stephen Spender Translation
Prize.
Please see individual language pages for more details and downloadable content.
