Languages at UCS

The Modern Languages Department offers French, German and Spanish to both CIE IGCSE and Pre-U Standard, as well as Mandarin to GCSE level and Pre-U level. From September 2018 we are delighted to also offer Italian in the Lower Remove, as a beginners option, which will then lead to IGCSE and Pre-U study (see the new Italian page above for more information). Pupils commence with the study of French in Year 7. In Year 9 pupils can then opt for German, Italian, Mandarin or Spanish as additional languages at beginners level. We also run Lower School clubs for Italian, German, Mandarin and Spanish, as well as a Linguistics and Code Breaking Club (all years). The academic enrichment sessions on a Friday afternoon offer the Sixth form as wide range of seminars, focusing specifically on university skills and topics in the field of languages, ranging from linguistics and translation work to film, poetry and current affairs.

The department is based in the Jeremy Bentham building and has two state-of-the-art ICT suites and a broad range of resources available to the pupils, including subscriptions to Quizlet and and departmental websites and materials. We maintain an excellent track record in preparing pupils for Higher Education and throughout the school strive to offer as much variety and intellectual stimulation as possible, whilst tailoring tuition to individual pupils’ needs. The department organises trips to Antibes, Montpellier, Hamburg, Salzburg, Valencia and Seville, in addition to cinema, museum and theatre outings. The Modern Languages Society is key to promoting such opportunities. Pupils are also actively encouraged to partake in a number of language events and competitions, such as internal vocabulary leagues, Lower and Middle School Linguistics Competitions,  national French and Spanish debating competitions, the Think Kafka Essay Prize, the UK Linguistics Olympiad and the Stephen Spender Translation Prize.

Please see individual language pages for more details and downloadable content.
